
PIGMENTATION
Pigmentation is caused when the skin cells become damaged or unhealthy, the skin will try to produce extra melanin protect your skin. When this process to happening parts of your skin may turn lighter resulting in something called hypopigmentation, or will darken causing hyperpigmentation.
Common causes of hyperpigmentation are:
Over-exposure to the sun
Genetics
Hormonal changes
Medical conditions and trauma to the skin (such as burns or as a result of spots and picking).

As well as Hyper and Hypo pigmentation we have another form of pigmentation called Melasma. This is a skin condition which tends to look like brown patches and presents its self fairly symmetrical, found in common areas such as; Upper Lip, around the under eyes/upper cheeks and forehead. Melasma happens because of overproduction of the cells that make the colour of your skin. It is common during pregnancy or even taking hormonal medications.
